Introduction and Eligibility Criteria 

The Refugee Centre’s transitional housing program is a 6-month intensive integration program designed for asylum seekers or accepted refugees who are highly motivated to find employment and transition to permanent housing.

This is not an emergency program or a “first housing” program. Housing is provided to support participation in this intensive integration program. The program has clear goals and responsibilities for a limited duration. Participants must follow program rules and take an active role in achieving their goals.

The apartments are located in various neighborhoods of Montreal. Participants must therefore be able to live independently, manage their daily tasks, and share an apartment with a roommate. Program clients are supported by a caseworker to achieve their goals, but it is important that participants be ready to find a job and secure permanent housing within six months.

We encourage all applicants and organizations to carefully read the eligibility criteria before applying or making a referral.

To be eligible for our program, individuals must meet the following criteria:

- Be an accepted asylum seeker or refugee

- If you are an asylum seeker, you must have received the acknowledgment of receipt for your application or the brown document (Asylum Seeker’s Identity Document (DIDA))

- Be receiving social assistance (financial aid) or already have a job

- Have a valid work permit

- Be a single person or a couple (unfortunately, we cannot accommodate families at this time)

- Be 18 years of age or older

- Be able to independently perform daily household tasks

- Be willing to live with a roommate

- Be motivated and ready to find a job as soon as possible

 

This form is the only way to apply for the Refugee Center’s housing program.

 

Participation in the program requires an active and consistent commitment from participants. This is a short-term program focused on achieving specific objectives, not long-term housing.

While each participant’s journey may look different, the program process  generally involves:

• An initial adjustment period to settle into the apartment and neighborhood
• A focused period to look for work and stabilize employment
• Preparation for securing permanent housing and transitioning out of the program

Participants are expected to meet regularly with their caseworker, complete bi-monthly check-ins, and work toward their objectives. Regular participation and communication are essential.

This program is for people who are ready to take initiative and work toward employment and housing goals within six months.

Our apartments feature 1-2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a dining area equipped with a table and chairs. You will get your own room, but will have to share the apartment with 1 other person. Rent is $535/month, including utilities and wifi. We have locations in Ahuntsic, Lachine and Downtown. Clients are placed based on current availability.

As part of The Refugee Centre's Transitional Housing Program, clients live with 1 roommate. To foster comfort and communication, roommates are matched based on gender and as much as possible, language as well. That means these factors inform our availabilities. You can find them below.

Individuals who do not fit the above profiles can still apply to the housing program when the form is open but they may deal with a longer waiting period.

Code of Conduct and Rules of the Building

1. I respect the policy of non-aggression and non-violence towards staff, roommates and other residents.

2. I ensure that there is no excessive noise in any place at any time.

3. I make sure to leave the space clean after my use, and I participate in the household chores.

4. I do not consume alcohol or drugs in the establishment.

5. I communicate and live with my roommate(s) respectfully.

6. I am willing to work out any differences or conflicts between myself and my roommates in a mature and responsible manner.

6. I will not bring any pets into the apartment

7. I will ensure all furniture and appliances provided in their apartment stay in good condition and I will leave them there once I move out.

8. I will not smoke in the apartment or building.

Consent to Disclose Personal Information

By Checking the box below, I acknowledge and consent to the following:

• I voluntarily provide my personal information, including name, contact details, and other relevant data, to The Refugee Centre for the purpose of facilitating the provision of services and any related activities.
• My personal information will be used internally by The Refugee Centre and may be shared with third-party organizations only with my explicit consent, which will be requested via a separate consent form.
• My personal information will be retained for the duration necessary to fulfill these purposes and in accordance with Quebec’s privacy laws, including the Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector (Loi sur la protection des renseignements personnels dans le secteur privé).
• I understand that I have the right to access, update, or correct my personal information at any time.
• My personal information will be securely stored and handled in accordance with industry standards.
• I may withdraw my consent at any time by notifying The Refugee Centre, though I understand that doing so may affect my ability to participate in the program or receive services.
